I'm trying to get a little more room on my G4 iBook by cleaning things up. When I drag my Classic System Folder to the trash, I get a pop-up saying that I can't proceed because the System Folder is required by the System.

Any tips on getting rid of this folder?

Thanks.

When you to Preferences>Classic, is classic runnining? If so turn it off. I know that Panther does not require OS9 to be present, and I'm sure that Jaguar didn't either. Alaso, when you select the folder and do a Get Info on it (Command-i), and go to Ownership & Permissions, and click on the details triangle, you'll see a gold padlock, is it locked or open? If locked, click on it to open it and try trashing the folder.

I tried both your suggestions, but I still get the same message, that the folder is required by the system.

Try this maybe:
Open "System Folder"
Try trashing the Finder file inside it first.
If that works then try the whole folder again.

(perhaps relogging or restarting will help)

Try just deleting the contents piece by piece, not the folder itself.

or as a last resort, in the terminal:

First change the name of the folder to "zap" (because having /System... and rm in the same command is a bad idea)

Then:
Code:
sudo rm -rf "/zap"
BE CAREFUL!!!! Don't get the path wrong, it will blindly erase -anything- without question.

By "anything" I mean the whole damn disk.
You can take the dude out of So Cal, but you can't take the dude outta the dude, dude!

from another thread: http://forums.macnn.com/90/mac-os-x/231046/cant-remove-classic-10-3-5-a/

Code:
sudo mv /System\ Folder/ ~/.Trash/
will move the folder to the trash rather than deleting it, seems a bit safer (I used that command when I wanted to trash Classic).

1 move the contents of the System Folder to the Trash

2 reboot or log off/back on

3 empty the Trash

4 drag the System Folder to the Trash

5 empty the Trash.

You can't Trash the System Folder while it contains live system files, such as the System and the Finder. You can't empty the Trash while it contains live system files, such as the System and the Finder. You _can_ drag the OS 9 System and Finder to the Trash, so long as they're not in a System Folder. And after a reboot or a log off/on, files placed in the Trash aren't live files anymore. And the System Folder no longer contains live system files, and so can be deleted without a problem.

I think that Apple went out of their way to make it difficult to delete system files, even OS 9 system files. You can do it if you really want to, but you've got to really want to. I think that this is a Good Idea(tm).
