Hi everybody,
I have a PowerMac G3, blue and white, 400 MHz with 768 Mb RAM. I recently bought from Apple the CDs to install Panther (these are the black CDs; 3 CDs for OS X and a white CD for Xcode Tools).
I chose erase and isntall and then in the middle of the procees I got a message saying "Failure in installing software".Tried same several times with same result. Used disk utility to erase the disk to zero data and then tried again erase and install, same result. Tried to partition the disk and then isntall Panther, same message. I don't know what else to try.
Can anybody help?

I don't know why it would be failing. If you have access to another Mac, you could clone it to your G3's drive using Disk Utility or a third party app like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper.

you probably need to update your firmware
(i'm assuming you're moving from os9...)
otherwise...you could have a bad cd (i've seen this happen)...

Under File or Window menu I believe you have the option of viewing an installer log, perhaps that'll give you some more clues.

Have you verified the installation disks?

Hi everybody,
I think I solved the problem (last night around 3:00 am).
First I tried to reinstall OS 9 and then update to OS 9.2 and updta firmware. With a minor glitch, things went well. I tried to install Panther over it and got the same problem (error in installing etc).
Then I removed the 512 non Apple RAM that I had installed a few days ago and tried again, error again. At last I decided to erase and install with the RAM out (I still had 256 left).
And this time everything worked fine!!!
I had read somewhere that added RAM could cause problems in installing.
Thanks everybody for the suggestions.

Hi Marcelo. I think that I´ve got a problem like yours. When I try to install OSX from 9.2.2 in a G4 350 (128 Mb RAM) this message appears: "An error ocurred.
Startup Disk was unable to select the install CD as the startup disk.(-2)"
If you speak spanish (because your name...) please drop me a line to mercadodei@infovia.com.ar
