Hi all,

Have an old G3 imac and need to replace os 9 on there so purchased 10.3.2 off ebay and they have arrived but are ibook discs, will these install on the imac?

Cheers,

Matt

EDIT: further to that, what is the best way to get the data off the imac before i install panther? I have a network at home, just share a drive on a windows box and put the data on that??

before you install OS X make sure you check your firmware is the latest before hand, otherwise you could have a broken iMac.

putting the data on the Winbox should be fine as a backup - do a bit at a time incase you've named any of the Mac files with characters the Winbox wont understand.

Cheers,

I think it's the latest version it updated on Sunday, I just plan to use the windows box as a temp store and then i'll try and work out what needs to go back.

Never done this before so it's going to be very interesting doing this, it's my gf's imac so i'm treading on fresh ground. Looking forward to getting my first mac in the summer

To answer your question, I don't think the install disks will work.

They have the correct software on them, but the installer disks that come with Macs tend to be tied to that particular family of machine, iMac disks to iMacs, G5 Tower disks to G5 towers etc.

This is a licensing issue, the disks you bought shouldn't have been sold separately from the iBook.

Installer disks require you to boot from them.

When you boot your iMac from the Installer it will just show a dialog explaining that the installer disc will not work on your computer.

The only thing I'd rethink of moving the files to a window's box is the resource fork. You may lose that in copying the files over. OSX doesn't depend on the resource fork as heavily as OS9 but you if your wanting to run some classic apps, you may be in trouble.

The easiest way to test this is out is to move a file to windows, then copy it back and see if this is true or not.

Cheers mate,

Though with me buying the wrong disks, I'll not be copying anything over anytime soon.

Unless you want to reformat your drive for some reason, there is no need to copy the files to another location. OTOH, a backup drive is a good idea. You do need a set of retail discs, though. I'm sure it would be pretty easy to find them on the Marketplace.

I'd email the seller, advise him that he shouldn't have sold the discs separately from the iBook.

You won't get a refund or anything, but I'd still give the seller some ****.

If you haven't given him feedback yet, wait 89 days from the end of the auction and give him negative feedback. I advise waiting so he can't give you negative feedback.

I would suggest attempting to resolve the issue with the seller, instead of perpetuating a negative climate on eBay.

That said, give it a shot. Although this has been true of most of Apple's models, iBook disks seem to have been an exception to this rule in the past. They might work.
