Well, I finally upgraded from OS 9 to 10.4 on my pismo. With 512 mb ram and a Fujitsu 5400 rpm hard drive, the speed is pretty good. The shutdown warning with 2 minute timeout really annoys me though. Anyone know a way to get rid of it so after I select Shut Down, it just shuts down like in OS 9?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Not sure about any way to remove the shutdown dialog when you choose it from the Apple menu, but try ctrl-cmd-opt-power and let us know if that's the behavior you're after (don't feel like shutting down my computer right now)...

Hold option when selecting it from the menu and it will go immediately.

Is there any other way (other that Fruitmenu) to log out/shut down immediately, without having to push an extra key on the keyboard?

Fruitmenu has the ability to do this, but when it's installed it significantly increases the amount of time it takes to get back to the login screen so it's not worth it for me.

Interesting.

Yes, on several occasions in the past I noticed an absurd delay when I logout before the login screen appears. The screen just fades to blue and sits there... sometimes for so long that I think the system is frozen.

I have troubleshot the problem and it led me to fruitmenu specifically. When I uninstalled it, the delay was gone. When I reinstall it, the delay returns!

Honestly, I don't know if I have tried it since upgrading to Tiger, maybe the bug has been corrected by now. I really would like Fruitmenu to work, I'll try installing it again tonight.

fruitmenu is amazing...i have access to everything on my powerbook in contextual menus....plus (non-delayed!) shutdown, sleep, etc.

try it again, see if it works better now.

alternately, a week of doing option-restart, etc and you'll be used to it!)

Why do you want to shutdown instead of just letting it sleep?

Thanks! FruitMenu does the trick. I guess I'll be sending my $10 over soon.

Isn't shutting down better? It clears out the ram for fragmentation, leaks, and all that.

If you're shutting down habitually because you think your Mac will run faster as a result, you're most likely doing yourself a disservice. OS X is a modern, industrial strength OS with modern memory management. By shutting down/restarting needlessly, you're wasting more time waiting for the reboot to take place than anything else. I run pretty full loads on my Macs and only reboot when necessary (software updates).

I can't remember the last time I shut the machine down. OS X doesn't need it. Just let your machine go to sleep.

And on the topic of the original post--you do know that you don't have to wait 2 minutes, right? Just click the Shut Down/Log Out/ Restart button.
