I have a scanner application (VueScan) which frequently locks-up. Force Quit doesn't force anything. Sudo kill -9 xxx has no affect on it. When I try to shutdown everything terminates until it gets to the gray screen and then the wheel spins and spins.
Any suggestions?

Thanks

Tell VueScan they're fired! Hah. Actually, if it's something that's starting up when your computer boots, try booting your computer holding shift, as that boots Mac OS X into "Safe Mode"... I don't go there much, but I believe it is called Safe Mode, funny enough.

Then you can go delete that VueScan startup item from your login items in System Preferences -> Accounts, or from /Library/StartupItems/. Those are just a few ideas...

Is the scanner still connected to your computer when you're doing this? Try removing it, or moving it to a different port - perhasp connecting it directly to the computer without a hub.

I suspect there is an I/O pending to the scanner. Like other's suggested, unplug the scanner when this happens to see if the processes are then killable. When a process has a pending kernel-level I/O operation, it is usually un-killable. By turning off the scanner, the operaiton should fail and the process then should proceed by erroring out the stuck I/O.

Having said that, you may (not likely, but it still may happen) get a kernel panic when you unplug or turn off the scanner.

Cheers,

Rich

Thanks for all the suggestions. I was kind of looking down the road that you've suggested.
The scanner is running through an Adaptec scsi card. I suspect that this is the root of the problem.
I first thought the problem was occuring when I shut off the scanner before exiting VueScan. But then the problem reoccured with the scanner on. I guess I'll get a new scsi card and see what happens.

Or a new SCSI card driver, if Adaptec has one.

And here I go assuming that it was attached through USB... Yes, I agree that a new SCSI driver might be a good start. The model for kernel extensions (which includes drivers) changed in Tiger, so if you have Tiger you definately need a new driver.
