I have a file that originally lived on my iBook. I had Filevault running it. I have since moved my files to my new MAC and formatted and sold the iBook. I went to open one of these older files (*.DOC) and the file is encoded! I can not open it in any Word Processer. I have other files that were in that vault that seem to open fine. It does not ask me for any kind of passord nor are there any messages about it being encrypted. Word just does not recognize it the file and wants to convert it. The file contains nothing but garbage.

I am sure that his has something to do with the file living in the File Vault but I can not prove it. I definately never encrypted the file by any other means. If there anything that I can do?

Try opening it in TextEdit.

This is a computer-generated message and needs no signature.

FileVault does not encrypt individual files. It is basically an encrypted disk image. If you copy files out of the disk image (file vault) they are no longer encrypted. That particular .doc file must be damaged for some reason.

Okay. I am willing to accept that I am not having a file vault issue. But I still don't know what happened to this document. It is filled with garbage characters and word seems to think it is encoded. Any ideas?

Try to do a SAVE AS and from the Format menu choose Text Only.

If the file were protected by MS-Word encryption, it woould ask you for a password.

It sounds like the file itself is damaged and if that is the case, it may be irretrievable. You should check that other file have also not been somehow damaged from that disk or filevault.

Maybe it's a font problem. Try opening the file as plain text.

BTW: Anyone noticed that FredCQ posted twice, but only has a pc of 1?
