I'm trying to generate a URL to mount an SMB server. However, I can't get it to accept blank username and password fields. With AFP you just put AUTH=No User Authent as the username in the URL and it works fine (urlencoded of course). But that doesn't work with SMB.

Are you using the correct workgroup/domain? Also, is the Windows machine set to allow guest access?

It's not a Windows machine and there is no required workgroup. It's Samba running on a linux machine that has a directory set up for anonymous access (no user, no password). OS X's smb mounting won't accept an empty username and password in a URL, so I don't know what else to try.

Ah, I thought Samba was a Windows-only thing. For Linux, you can use:

http://netatalk.sourceforge.net/

or FTP. Or you could just set dummy passwords for the folder you are trying to access.

Samba is the open-source implementation of SMB. It was available for Linux long before OS X came out.

NFS may be a better way to go for a password-less environment. Depending on the setup, it would be easier and more secure than a guest login. Of course, using the word "secure" to describe NFS is almost blaspheme. At least with NFS you would be using a native Unix method on two native Unix machines.

Sorry guys, it's SMB or nothing. I can't change the server, I just want to be able to mount it through a URL. I know how to get an AFP URL with no username or password, but it doesn't work for SMB.
