The 10.4.3 release notes say "Quartz 2D Extreme is not a supported feature in Tiger, and re-enabling it may lead to video redraw issues or kernel panics". I guess we won't see it till next version. I was kind of looking forward to see it enabled with this update

Too bad it wasn't really promised. Or officially announced by Apple at all. It was in one presentation, that's it.

Quartz 2D Extreme wasn't disabled by the update on my system, even though the configuration file was overwritten. Apple may have made a glitch with the intended change.

In case 10.4.3 does disable Q2DE for your system, you can reenable it from the config file. Open this file in Property List Editor: (path broken across two lines to be forum friendly)

/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/
Frameworks/CoreGraphics.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Configuration.plist

Toggle down the Quartz2DExtremeConfiguration Dictionary entry, and it reveals the Quartz2DExtremeEnabled boolean. Change it to Yes

This sometimes works on unsupported systems. My system has a Radeon 8500, an unsupported card. However, manually turning on Q2DE caused the Core Image Fun House to actually work. Not all the filters seem to function, but many of them do.

Why would you want to when they clearly advice you not to enable it?

Some people like to venture outside the mainstream. Not that I am one of them, at least not with any production machines.

After 10 min of use with Quartz 2D Extreme turned on I got my first KP of 10.4.3.

Trust the document...

I tried Quartz 2D Extreme before 10.4.3 already and on my Dual 1.8 G5 with ATI 9600 it was slower than normal (and extremely slow in Safari). I see no point in enabling it.
