Here is the winner of the FreeBSD logo competition.

*Ahem*

What were they thinking? I think they need some Mac users to pimpslap their GIMP-using butts with some graphic design knowledge.

I think the logo is pretty good for an open source OS. Much better than the clip-art devil they had before.

I'd say it's not that bad. The real problem is that it was designed as a photo-realistic logo. This means that black and white and low-color version tend to look odd. But if you consider the formats this will probably be used in, it might not be as much of an issue.

It looks more like an icon than a logo to me.

The original icon was better, but the new one isn't THAT bad. At least their icon is still a devil. NetBSD's icon is a stupid flag:

It's a nice flag, but I just think the daemons are so much cooler.

Isn't it amazing how you can't just draw lines and circles in Photoshop?

Mmmm, that IS kind of crappy.

What is it, a marble with horns?

And does EVERYONE have to be doing aqua these days?

I agree, the new logo is completely impersonal. They used to have a branded mascot character...now they have a glass ball that looks like it should be no some gift shop shelf.

Reminds me of some Japanese-style anime of sorts...

They still have a mascot. The mascot is still the original daemon. It's the logo that's changed.

OK, first of all, Beastie is not a devil. He's a daemon. Er, demon. Whatever.

Secondly, he ain't no clip-art daemon either. He's got a long history (at least by OS mascot standards.)

I always thought it was the ultimate badass computer mascot.
