Are you sure that phonetic input doesn't work? A font is just a font and should have nothing to do with the actual input method.

Do the Japanese fonts which were included with OS X work?
Are you sure you switched to phonetic input (kotoeri)?
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

It sounds like maybe a font where they just replaced the roman characters with Japanese, i.e. "a" is "ka" or something. Like a symbol font or something, ya know? Or maybe not.

I've seen fonts that are not true Japanese fonts, but are merely English ones with kana replacing what's actually shown on each key. If that's what this is, then I suggest you get rid of those fonts and get some decent ones.

Me too, I still can't post new topics.

Yeah, but they're still Latin-encoded fonts that just have some kana in place of letters.

I've searched high and low for good Japanese fonts, and I can tell you right now, you won't find anything to download. You can order Japanese font collections from foundries, but they typically cost hundreds of dollars (or more). They sell some at the Apple store here where I live.

The only free ones I'm aware of are available in fink and whatnot. Otherwise, you're screwed.

i dunno about new fonts, but when i type in japanese it's phonetic. so "a" would be ”あ” and if i typed out "arigatoo" it would be "ありがとう” and so on. so shouldn't the fonts just be the same input?

Reread the description of what these fonts are.

OS X ships with basically just the Japanese equivalents of Helvetica and Times New Roman. If you do any kind of design work in Japanese or using Japanese characters, you need other font styles.

Yep. But you'd want fonts that include kanji anyway.

Here's a freeware font called あくあフォント that's also available in fink. It's handwritten, so it might not be quite what you want.

There's also FS Fonts, which are free, but give me an error when I try to install them with Font Book.

I also found さざなみ, which is an evolution of a free font made to replace 東風 when its license changed or something. This one also gives me an error for some reason.

Finally, there's しののめ, but when I downloaded what I thought was the binary, I coudln't find the font files.

Thanks for the links, Wataru. I love the look of that AquaFont.
