I have a nice little FW/USB Lacie PocketDrive (30GB) that I'd like to use as a portable media storage device for photos, music, and videos between my PowerMac G4 and my iBook. I'd like to retain the traditional Mac OS X file structure (e.g., Library, Movies, etc.) but if possible I'd like it to be Windows-readable, too. If I formatted the drive on a Windows machine using FAT32, would that do the trick?

Yep. You don't need a Windows machine to do that, the Mac OS X Disk Utility can do that for you.

That said, I wouldn't recommend keeping essential data on a FAT volume if you are primarily a Mac user.

Why not? Especially if I make backups?
