Hello,
I have an external firewire drive linked to my iMac g5. I have installed on the firewire as well the Tiger as a backup to my system.
I want to back up my user folder from time to time.
My question:
Is it possible to trash the User folder of the firewire, and then to drag & drop the one from my Mac each time I want to backup.
Or, do I need a special software like Carbon Copy Cloner or others to do it.

TIA

Raymond

You can manually trash and copy over if you want to.

Backup software will automate the process for your convenience, Carbon Copy Cloner is for cloning whole disk though afaik. Try something like http://www.lacie.com/silverkeeper/ maybe.

raygol, you probably would be fine doing it manually, but I don't trust the Finder with huge, critical transfers as much as I trust a respected utility like SuperDuper. I would also be a bit hesitant to copy the Users folder using the Finder because it most likely will screw up permissions to some extent (although you don't have to worry about that if you only have one user).

You can do it with my own free iPodBackup. It doesn't matter that your FireWire drive isn't an iPod.

If this is possible, and no possible hidden files or hidden folders can potentially disappear, why should I use software instead of simply D&D.

TIA
