When I type in Pages, it will find misspellings. When I click on the word and select Learn Word, it rarely seems to do this.
Where is the custom dictionary located so I can do a little editing?

Brian says (9:16 AM): I was looking at houses in Ottawa... I actually have a temptation in me to move
Jeff ******* says (9:19 AM): Eww, Ottawa is gross. It's infested with politicians, and presently, 1 Harper as well.

I don't understand. My set language is English. I see the file. Can't open it.
What I want to do is open and edit it.
Better yet, why doesn't Pages seem to add to the library or learn words?
Thanks.

The alterations you make to the dictionary are not going to be saved at the /Library/ level (otherwise you would be deciding the custom spellings for all users on your Mac), they will be saved at the ~/Library level. Whereabouts? I don't know. Probably an equivalent folder and file.

Yeah, I already figured out that it would be in my user folder.
This is puzzling. I would like to add words to it.
Is an easier question "How do you remove a word from your spelling dictionary?"

To add words
To add unknown words, simply control-click (or right click if you can) on the underlined word, and you'll get a contextual menu that contains suggested corrections, as well as "Ignore Spelling" and "Learn Spelling".
To edit added words that are mistakes
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.p...ary%2Fspelling
"If you ever accidently clicked "Learn" in the spelling window of any Cocoa app, your dictionary will not recognize the wrong word the next time you repeat your mistake. If you want to make it "unlearn" the word, start by opening the folder ~/Library -> Spelling. You may find several files, one for each dictionary you use e.g.: en for English, Multilingual, pt_BR for Brazilian Portuguese, etc.
If you open one of these files in TextEdit or BBEdit, you will see that the words are not separated at all, and for some reason, pico will only recognize the first word added. I suggest using emacs in the Terminal, which separates each entrance by a ^@ symbol. You should type something like this:
emacs ~/Library/Spelling/en
Its also a nice way to add lots words using copy/paste.

Athens,
Thanks for that link. I already know the right click ignore, learn routine. The trouble is that Pages ignores the contextual menu item "learn" for me. I can click it a billion times during a document and it just won't quit underlining it.
Reading through that link I found the following:
"This is all way too complicated. There is a better answer.
The better way is to remove the accidently learned word the way Apple intended. There is a mechanism for doing this already in place.
In Mail, for example, pull down Edit | Spelling | Spelling... Among the fields available, there is one field in which it is possible to type a word. Type in the accidently learned word and click on the Forget button.
That's all. Easy."
So, in Pages (or any other cocoa app) either go to the menu bar and go to Spelling>Spelling or right click and go to Spelling>spelling. Now you get a dialog box that let's you do everything. (If you highlight the word and right click you will get the highlighted word in the box. Not always true using the menubar.)
You can also type a word in the open space in the box of a word you want to forget and then click forget.
I would still like to be able to see my list of custom words but at least now Pages remembers the words I want it to learn.
Thanks again.
