I bought my parents a mini for Christmas and have been setting it up. One thing I'm sure will happen is that dock icons will be inadvertently dragged/deleted. Then my parents will have no idea of what program was deleted or where to go to get it back.

Is there a simple way to lock the dock for the admin account? I know I can set up another account and lock it, but ideally I would like to have just one user account on this computer. Are there any 3rd party apps that will do this?

For an admin account it's not that easy. But if you give them a standard account, you can put on the Finder & System Parental Controls, which has Dock non-modification check box.

TransparentDock allows you to set this up.

I guess I'll be making another user account with "parental" controls.

The TransparentDock application didn't mention support for 10.4, and I'm hesitant to use it because of any bugs it may introduce.

I found it interesting to see a post on this subject because I just had frustration with this earlier today and sent Apple feedback. I don't think it would be too difficult to implement an option to "Lock the Dock."

It would be useful because I have a folder in the Dock that I frequently drag items from the Desktop into. It always slips and slides out of the way.. same thing happens when I try to drag something to the trash. I ended up turning my account into a "Standard" user and locking it that way.

If you hold down command when dragging an item to a folder in the Dock the item will be prevented from being added to the Dock, which is what creates the problem. So nothing will be sliding around. (This is not a solution from locking the Dock in general though.)

transparent dock is a great app...
i've got my icons locked, no bouncing, plus...a clear dock (just icons).
lots of useful options.

& works with 10.4.3...
