i have bought lacie external hard disk to back up all my data before re-formatting HD (powerbook mac OSX 10.3.9)

however, when i try and copy the data onto the drive every few files it complains that its doesnt like the file names, illegal characters and wot not and then it stops copying. (illegal from a windowsy perspective i suspect.)

is there anyway i can get round this? can i either get it to ignore"illegal" file names, or is there a way to convert all my files names into something it likes?

at the moment i can only copy the files virtually one by one which could take a few years.

If you will only be using it on your Mac then just initialize it as HFS+ in Disk Utility.
