Like I said. I'm trying to reinstall 10.2 on a Beige G3, but all I have here at home is an old 14" multiscan only capable of 640x480 or 800x600. I can see the apple and the spinny wheel thing but then when the computer is told to switch to 1024x832 or whatever, the screen just goes blank. I know it's there waiting to install but I can't do anything because I can't see it. My good monitors are at school right now (I'm home on break) so I can't do anything there. Is there some way to force it down to a better resolution (aka one I can see...) or perhaps I could try loading the installer on my iMac and watching the steps so I know exactly what to type in...I already formatted the HD so there's no going back, but this is just a spare computer so it's not a devestating loss, I'd just like to get this working before I go back to school. Any suggestions?

You can't install Mac OS X 10.2 on a Beige G3. You'll need a third party hack to do this.

Try using this: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/7594

This should work with Beige G3s. Good luck man.

Just curious. What if you used Target Disk Mode on your iMac and tried installing Jaguar on your Beige G3 Hard drive. I think it will treat it like a normal FireWire drive. I'm not sure if it will solve your problem or not but, you could try it.

Are sure I can't? Cause I did. Last year when I first got it, I used just the normal OS 10.2 discs from Apple, it installed without a hitch. And the beige G3 doesn't have firewire ports. I do have an external firewire enclosure, but that's also at school. So at home I have access to: 2 beige G3's (One desktop, one minitower), a Summer 2000 Ruby iMac, and a Late 2004 iBook G4. The MT is usually my server, it stays in a friend's room, she doesn't have a computer. The iMac stays home for the family, the iBook is mine, and the DT I picked up for $2 recently, I'm still deciding what to do with it. But I'm positive I have 10.2 running perfectly for at least 7 months, I'm just reinstalling everything now because the hard drive wasn't doing so well.
I'm downloading XPostFacto now, I'll see if that helps any.

Copy and paste from XPostFacto's Readme:
"The Beige G3s and Wallstreet Powerbooks were supported by Apple in Mac OS X 10.0 through 10.2, but are no longer supported in 10.3 (Panther). However, XPostFacto can get these models working in Panther. There are some video-related issues in some configurations -- see the known problems section."

The video problem is that the A/V in/out isn't supported under OS X. My main problem is that the installer switches resolutions so I can't see anything. This same thing happened the first time I installed OS X, but I had another monitor that I used that worked. I don't have that luxury right now, I need another fix. Help?

What if you reset your NVRAM and then tried booting from the disc. It's worth a shot.

Hmm, did FireWire Target Mode work on the beige G3, or did they not add that until the New World machines? Unfortunately, I'm guessing probably the latter.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

But I went ahead and went back to school and got my 19" monitor, so I'm good to go now. IF the hard drives work. But that's a topic for another thread.

Beige G3 didn't even have Firewire.

AFAIK Firewire didn't exist on a Mac until the B/W G3.

D'oh, of course. Not sure what I was thinking there. Oh well.
