we have a network at school running OS X 10.3.9 client and server, and there is one specific classroom where the computers are logging in extremely slowly as compared to the other rooms. The clients are set to login and mount the user home directory using LDAP authentication and are all imaged from one main master image, so the settings should all be the same on the clients.

From the computers that are logging in slowly, the ping times to the server appear to be normal, <.4 ms, and the internet connection is functioning normally. Connecting to the server that appears to be the problem, as it takes roughly 2 minutes to login from the screen where it lists the user names. The computers are on the same subnet and the network connections appear to be fine. Any suggestions as to how to approach the problem or any potential solutions? thanks in advance.

Where is the pause - while you still see the loginwindow progress bar, or on a blank screen before the Finder draws your desktop?

Bump up the logging on a client to see what loginwindow is waiting for. Often it's DNS related. Edit /etc/syslog.conf on a test client to include the line:

*.* <TAB><TAB>/var/log/system.log

then HUP syslogd or reboot.

Enable ssh (System Preferences:Sharing, check the 'remote login' box) and ssh to your test box as a local admin.

tail the log with

tail -f /var/log/system.log

and then have a network user log in. loginwindow is pretty verbose at this point so you should see where it's waiting.

If it seems directory related, then you can enable DirectoryService logging by sending a -USR1 signal to DirectoryService, as per the Server documentation.

//here is the output from tail when a userlogs in, hopefully someone can spot something that can lead to a resolution to the problems. Oh, and Jellytussle, thanks for the help so far. Your console-fu is strong.

Are you sure that the DNS is configured properly? Maybe somebody hardcoded the IP to the server in your /etc/hosts file or somewhere else?

Do a "dig andersen-x-srv.nmusd.us.nmusd.us" and check the answer section for the IP address that the computer thinks belongs to the server.

Then do a reverse lookup on the IP address:
dig -x THE.IP.ADDRESS

You may want to do this from both "working" clients and "broken" clients to see if this is the problem.

Is there a problem with the Firewall settings on the slow machines?

thanks for the advice watson, i tried dig and looked in the hosts file.

all appears to be well, the server address isn't hard coded in the hosts file.

when performing dig, the answer section showsthe correct IP address for the server and the reverse lookup yields a proper result as well.

i am fairly certain it is not a firewall issue, the firewall is turned off on all machines.

i tailed the syslog of a normally operating computer and found that the logs were basically identical, except for a small portion at the end, where the slow computer has these additional lines:

Dec 16 14:20:40 localhost automount[302]: the console user is logged in
Dec 16 14:21:28 localhost automount[302]: NSLVnode.processAddResult: Adding neighborhood NHHS-INST...
Dec 16 14:21:28 localhost automount[302]: NSLVnode.processAddResult: Adding neighborhood N-MUSD...
Dec 16 14:21:28 localhost automount[302]: NSLVnode.processAddResult: Adding neighborhood ADMIN...
Dec 16 14:21:28 localhost automount[302]: markDirectoryChanged: new mtime for '/Network' is 1134771688.160247...
Dec 16 14:21:28 localhost automount[302]: Requesting Finder notification for changes to '/Network'...

is there a way to stop the computer from attempting to add these neighborhoods, assuming that this is what is causing the delay?

The difference is here

"Dec 16 14:20:40 localhost automount[302]: the console user is logged in
Dec 16 14:21:28 localhost automount[302]: NSLVnode.processAddResult: Adding neighborhood NHHS-INST..."

thats 48 seconds between messages. All the other messages are within a second of each other. The messages are not all that useful as they are coming fairly quickly, with the exception of that gap.

This is an AFP mount?

Oh and there seems to be two automounts. 307 and 302.Weird

Dec 16 14:20:40 localhost automount[307]: the console user is logged in
Dec 16 14:20:40 localhost automount[302]: the console user is logged in

Here is another suggestion, then:
from working and nonworking computers try to get an MD5 digest of the automount utility:

md5 /usr/sbin/automount

If the digests match, then it is not a problem with automount, but with some configuration specific to the client computers. If they do not match however, check the build numbers of both working systems and non-working systems in About This Mac. You should also probably check to see if the same updates have been applied to all of the systems. Barring an issue there, there might be an issue in the way in which the clients have been updated (delta vs. combo updates).

Keep us posted.

Those are Windows workgroups. Try unchecking the SMB service in Directory Access, and see if they go away.
