Classic cannot find preferences and start up

When I try to start up Classic, I get the message: "Classic cannot start. There is a problem with saving preferences required to run Classic." At Classic Preferences, I get the message: "System Preferences Failure. Classic Preferences is unable to save or read preferences."

Any suggestions???
