The last number of incremental and security updates by Apple have cause quite a few web pages to render incorrectly with misplaced modules and overlapping text and large blank areas where text and or pictures should be. Among those that I've come across are:

The California Newspaper Project's Database search (only temporary - it now works) http://cbsr26.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/starfi...PPUB&OK=OK

The Los Angeles Times Crossword Sunday Puzzle page http://games.latimes.com/index_cross...ure_code=lacal The actual puzzle doesn't show up - big blank where it should be.

laist http://www.laist.com/ Overlapping text and pictures

The Internet Movie Database (not the main page, but any individual movie's page) for instance "Amarcord" at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071129/...c=1;ft=21;fm=1 Misaligned text modules and blank areas

These pages on my system 10.4.3 with latest Java update and yesterday's Security Update suffer from one or more of the problems mentioned above. Yet all render correctly in both Classic and on an external Firewire drive with 10.3.9

Don't know if anyone else is having these problems, I've not read about anything similar on any of the popular message and troubleshooting boards, but there are definite problems on my system that I'd like to straighten it out before updating my Wife's iBook - she spends a lot of time on the IMDB and for it to look anything other than 100% - well, I'd be in deep do do!!

It does not matter which Browser is used - Safari, Firefox, IE, OmniWeb, Opera - bad on all of them.

Everything looks fine to me.
Did you mess with font book lately?

I bet you have some wonky fonts or corrupt caches -- or have made some weird setting in all your browsers -- because every single site you listed works fine on my machine in Safari.

The "wonky fonts or corrupt caches" is a no brainer answer to this question. If you can't offer real direction please don't reply. I'm not trying to dis anyone here, but such responses are not instructive to novices like me and lead nowhere.

i'd say tooki's right. sounds like a font issue on your machine.

search for "yasu" or "onyx" on macupdate.com or versiontracker.com.
they both clean up your font caches (among many other things).
i think you'll need to reboot or at least log out and back in again once that's done.

cheers

Launch Fontbook.app in your Applications folder
Highlight the 1st font than press (apple + a) to select all you fonts
Under the File menu, select Validate Fonts.

This will check all your fonts and tell you if any are corrupt.

I am not going to take the time to write out every darned detail when there are whole sites devoted to the topic. When someone nudges you in the right direction, as I clearly did, the correct thing to do is take that direction and search for the specifics.

I also suggest you read http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html before asking anything else.

P.S. You have no choice but to "except" my answer: you aren't paying me or anyone else here for our services. A hint that sets you on the right path is something you should be grateful for. Blasting people who try to help you is not conducive to getting future help. (Note that post titles are not visible, but I can see them in search results.)

The reason I felt that fonts were not the problem was that I've periodically run FontBook's validation process and never found a corrupt one and I run OnyX weekly to clear the font caches. As was suggested here, I ran them again and FontBook did find two corrupted fonts and I deleted them and then ran OnyX to clear the font caches and restarted. Unfortunately that did not help - the web pages in question still do not load correctly.

tooki, I sorry if you took offense to my "no brainer" reply, but as I've said I regularly check the fonts for corruption and did not think that's where problem was. I fully realize that the help one receives here is free and I appreciate it very much.

I suspect that maybe a third party app might be the villain and will continue to try to sort this one out.

Again, I am very appreciative of the assistance I've received here and I am sorry if my words have upset anyone.

You didn't say anything about fonts until AFTER I and others did. And then you blasted me. So forgive me for not having ESP to figure out what you were thinking but didn't say, and then taking literally what you did say afterwards...

I noticed that at least one of the sites had flash animation. I had troubles with flash animations after my update to 10.4.3 Try re-installing the flash plug-in. This resolved my issues with flash.
