Assuming both situations are using a 80gb Raptor [drive #1] and 500gb 7K500 [drive #2]:

would it be better to ....

a) install both the OS and applications on the raptor, while using the 500gb as the scratch?

b) install the OS on the raptor, and have all applications installed on the 500gb drive and have the scratch on the same drive?

how about for applications such as Final Cut Pro, which has a lot of associating files (and sound bites in the case of Audio Programs) ..... what would be the best way to split this up over those two drives? (for optimal CPU/disk performance)

any help would be MUCH appreciated!! THANKS

Anything frequently accessed should go on the Raptor: OS, App executables, scratch file.
Everything else can go on the 500: User files, libraries of samples/demos/etc

Would having the OS (+VM). apps and scratch on the same partition be best and having the libraries on the big 500gb?

I'm not sure, but I thought maybe that having the scratch along with the OS/Apps would make the drive less efficient than putting that on the 500gb?

Does all the Pro apps place nice with having all of their libraries moved off the main OS drive?

thanks for your help

A lot of apps [stupidly] have to be installed on the startup disk. (Any apps Apple installs can't be updated unless they're in the default location.)

I'd have the OS and apps, as well as frequently-accessed files on the Raptor, and use the Deskstar for holding the bulk data.

tooki, would it be best to have all of the big libraries off on the Deskstar [is that what you meant by "bulk" data]? i.e. Garageband loops, FCP effects, etc.
