what does "hide" mean? how is it different than clicking the minus button?

Clicking the "minus" button removes an item from the list, so it won't run at login.

Putting a checkmark in the hide box means the item will still run at login, but it will be hidden, just as if you manually hid it using the Application's menu or the dock item menu. This is useful if you want something to run, but you don't want its windows visible.
