First of all, I know from reading these forums that nobody here is a fan of Norton. That's fine, but I got suckered into using it in the OS 8/9 days, and it worked well for me then. Stupid $50 off offer. Anyway, I get a recurring problem with my clamshell iBook. After using it for a while (weeks) the internet browsers stop working, and some other erratic behavior surfaces too. If I run a Norton Disk Doctor at that point, it will always give the following error:

Major error found in catalog B-tree
Node 10161, Record 0
"valvashon.4270140" has an incorrect data logical length
The catalog b-tree is blah blah blah
(10,7,36)

The node, record and file name above are always the same. The numbers in parenthesis are different (I think). I have gotten this error a dozen or more times when running Disk Doctor.

What can be done about this? Fixing it always works, but the problem always surfaces again. Would another disk repair program fix it for good? Should the OS (10.2.8) be reinstalled? New hard drive?

Once again, I know Norton stinks, but it's all I have or can afford at the moment.

Thanks-

Val

Boot from your 10.2.x disc and run the Disk Utility. Click "repair" on your laptop's drive. Reboot. Delete Norton.

1) Norton isn't installed. I run it off of the disk.

2) If I recall, Disk Utility doesn't find and fix this problem or at least doesn't tell me about it. I'll have to run it again when the problem happens and make note of what happens. I know that Disk Utility is a little cryptc with it's responses.

The Mac OS forum is for discussing Mac OS. Applications (e.g. Norton Disk Doctor Kevorkian) have their own forum.
