Hey all,

Just installed a WD external drive w/Retrospect. I've setup two Duplicate jobs for 3am, twice a week. The WD QuickStart says the scheduled jobs won't run if the computer is in "Sleep mode".

Is there a way I can have the Mac wake up a couple of minutes before 3am on those days?

cron job maybe?

TIA

Rob

Quick note: I'm aware of the System Preferences - Energy Saver schedule wake up, but it's very basic. I'm cool with it - it wakes up, checks mail and stocks right before I get up each morning - pretty cool. But not enough flexibility for what I need ("wake up 2:55am T,W,S,S").

I guess worst case I could just use that and wake it up myself when I get up, but sure seems like there'd be a way to make this happen.

Why not just wake it up everyday, if the backup is not due for that day it will just go back to sleep again.

Thats the only thing I can think off.

I'm having a bit of weirdness with my drive...

OS X shuts it down after a few minutes of inactivity, but leaves it mounted. That's cool with me.

When I wake back up SOMETIMES it will have been unmounted, and I'll get the error about possible data loss.

I need it to stay mounted so the backup will work when the 'puter wakes up!

Oops, I think I wasn't as clear as I could have been.

After a few minutes of inactivity, the drive spins down *but stays mounted*.

My Mac will go to sleep. The next morning I'll wake it up and the drive will have been unmounted in the meantime and I'll get the error about possible data loss. Other times it's there w/no problems.

The problem is that it needs to be mounted when my machine wakes up at 3am to do a backup.

/Volumes looks good. It's just not there when it's not mounted

I understood the problems you described, but I have seen multiple listings in the volumes folder for the same drive which had caused a similar problem for my dad.

He couldn't access the drive, but yet the icon showed up. If he ejected it and then used disk utility to mount it again, all was fine. But the problem would come back after sleep.

It was fixed when I unmounted all external drives, deleted all the entries in /volumes and he never had a a problem again.
