how can I prevent .ds_store/.trashes/._.Trashes from being created each time I plug in my USB drive?

I found a pref pane called Blue Harvest, but from what I've read so far, it only deltes .DS_Store files. But I don't want them created at all.

Second part to this question is, what is the point of those three files being created in every directory?

There is an app, iCleanup that removes those files. I've never seen a hint to prevent them from being created, except on network volumes.

Blue Harvest will prevent them from being created.
