Guys i'm new to mac and let me tell you... I love it, it blows Windows out of the water. But being new I am a little lost when it comes to advanced features ects.

My 1st question is about the OS. How much space does it take up on my HD? It seems likes it a much larger OS than XP. I have a powermac 2GH G5 that I got about a week ago. I do my websign and my video editing on it. I got a WD 160G HD installed with the powermac from the factory.

I don't really understand the disk utiliy on mac. It shows the "149GB WDC... ect" at the top than under that the "Macinstosh HD" When I click on the "149 Disk" it says "Total Capacity 149GB (160,000..ect Bytes)"

The under my Mac HD I only have 149GB cap. and 116GB avalible. So i've used around 32 GB.

I don't know if that right or not... I have about 12GB of music and about 30-40min of Movie that i'm editing for a project. So are those numbers correct?

Also how can you select muilitble iteams in finder and see how much memory they are taking up.

Sorry for the newbie questions.

Another question guys... about uninstalling programs on Mac. I know most programs so don't come with an uninstaller so here's what i've been doing. If I want to remove a program I just use spotlight and search for anything under that program, then I drop ALL the files into trash and just empty it.

Is that a good way to COMPLETLY uninstall a application from my mac? If not please post what you guys do, is there a uninstalling program that I can DL?

to get file sizes for multiple files:

select them - shift select for a group/apple select for indie items in a list view

then hold the alt key down and either select 'get info' from the file menu, or hold alt+apple and press 'i'

There's no need to seek out every single file associated with a program. Some apps come with an uninstaller, but otherwise all you need to do is drag the app itself to the trash.

OS X itself is 1-3GB depending on what extras you install. Pre-installed systems usually have everything (all languages, all printer drivers), so that's probably 3GB.

You know that a "160GB" drive is not actually 160GB, right? That's true regardless of the platform. They advertise it as 160GB based on 1KB=1000B, but computers use 1KB=1024B. That's just a fact of modern computing and has nothing to do with Macs or OS X. The true capacity of your drive is, in GB,
Code:
160 * 1000 * 1000 * 1000 / 1024 / 1024 / 1024 = 149
Just like Disk Utility says.

You can use programs like Omni Disk Sweeper to see what's taking up the most space on your drive.

I just drag the app to the trash. HD space is cheap and if I decide to reinstall I don't have to reconfigure anything.

Heck, some things I just never "install" in the first place. Run 'em off the disk image, unmount when done. Saves a little space and keeps my Applications folder trim.
