Imagine my surprise when I typed "arachnophobic" in Safari and got an underline but picked "Look up in dictionary" from the context menu and it showed up!

I thought the spell check service used the same dictionary as Dictionary.app. Apparently not.

Can anyone confirm this behavior? Any see it happen with other words?

(I put this in Mac OS X because it's not about an app, it's about the built-in spellcheck service)

No. The spellchecker uses its own word list.

Yeah, it happens all the time. The dictionary is more comprehensive than the spellcheck word list. Consolidation would be nice.

Perhaps, but Apple doesn't include dictionaries in other languages for Dictionary.app yet.
