aaargh.
10.4.3, powerbook.
i installed apple's open firmware password app some time ago, set it up (i thought).
never saw it again.
but...i cannot boot in single user mode, or from another disk.
when i boot holding "option", i see a lock, no drives.
clicking on the lock does nothing...
so i dL'd and tried to run the password app again...but it doesnt open (just opens & closes immediately in the dock).
any way i can disable this password??

change the amount of RAM in your machine and then reset the PRAM three times. to do that, boot your machine while holding command-option-P-R until you hear the chime. or you can use FWsucker to get it on a machine already running. ( this is a good page to check for tips.)

thanks.
i also realized that, if i boot holding option, i enter the OF password in the window NEXT TO the lock (i need a "slaps head" smilie here...); so i was able to select another disk to boot from after all).
still...time to kill the password entirely.
now back to work...!

If you know the password, it's easy. Hold down Command-Option-O-F at startup, then type these commands:
setenv security-mode none
shut-down
At some point you will get prompted for the password - enter it. After you enter these commands, it will shut down, at which point you should be able to start up with the Option key down and get to the boot selector without a password.

I remember one occasion when I messed around with OF on my PowerBook while at work. I wanted to disable the OF password and out of a sudden, I had one that (I thought) I never entered.
Guess what? I somehow entered "none" as password. Luckily I tried that just before I was going to jump out of the window…
