Today I copied a file from a server while holding down the cmd key (which copies and deletes the original at the same time). I do this all the time and it's worked find ever since... until today I found a potential problem about getting into this habit. Here's what I did.

I cmd-dragged a file from a local server onto my hard drive. Then, (thinking I was in a different App) I hit cmd-z (but, since I was still in the Finder, this activated the undo command). Then my file was gone! So thinking I could just undo the undo command, I hit cmd-z again and got an error and the file was NOT recoverable at all. Thankfully I happened to have the file somewhere else as well and I was able to get that one.

Don't let this happen to you! Careful with cmd-dragging files.

Okay... nevermind. I apparently assumed that the file was gone. I tried this again just for the heck of it with a test file and hitting cmd-z actually copied the file back onto the server and removes it from the hard drive, but hitting cmd-z again makes the error but, the file is still on the server.

Now I feel like an idiot... how do you delete forum topics?

You don't - sometimes you just have to accept being an idiot!

...or making a mistake. I think the OS is protecting you in this situation, and the error is a strong warning that you're doing something wrong. It's a good thing too!

It just freaked me out... I figured that undoing the undo command would return it back to normal again.
