Because Safari seems to have memory leaks, and generally bogs down after extended use, I've been using Camino (which has really come a long way). Camino does not seem to bog down and get slow, but I notice that it is using 122 megs of real memory and over 3 gigs of virtual memory, similar to what Safari was using, though without the bogging down.

Is this kind of memory use OK/normal?

How long has Camino been running? 3 gigs of virtual memory does seem excessive.

The memory leaks in Safari are known and Apple is (supposedly) working on fixing them.

From what I gather, the virtual memory usage stats are pretty much meaningless. I only noticed it on updating to 10.4.3. In earlier versions, Safari showed around 300-500MB virtual memory and in 10.4.3 started showing 2GB plus, which no app has ever done for me in os x.

As long as your hard drive space doesn't disappear, you are OK. I have noticed Safari being more bogged down in 10.4.3 but usually only after a long time or when I visit this forum because of the flash ads. I think there must be something wrong with the flash plugin or something.

Browsers are applications, for which we have a whole separate forum.
