Hi all,
Searched for this, but couldn't find it.
I would like to tell Spotlight not to examine my external volumes, as they contain backups of what's on my internal volumes. It makes Spotlight a bit slower when they are powered on.

System Preferences->Spotlight->Privacy
drag your external drives in there.

You know, it didn't even occur to me to check that tab. Figured it was something to do with encryption
My otherwise idle external drive thanks you,
Rob

Is there a way to drag the whole drive in there? I can't see /Volumes in the finder and I can't "Choose" the drive.

Drag its icon from the desktop, or from the "Computer" view in the Finder.
Or use the Finder's Go To Folder command to go to /Volumes.

Many thanks for the assistance guys, but no dice thus far.
Dragging the USB icon for the drive gives me the drop-target (i.e. the folders list is highlighted in black) but when I realease it, nothing appears.
Nor can I add individual folders contained on that volume directly from the finder.
Folders on my internal drive are added no problem.
Weird!

Adding to the privacy list seems temperamental. You may want to wait a moment and see if it shows up anyway.
Another way to turn off Spotlight for the drive is to use the command line: sudo mdutil -i off /Volumes/nameOfDrive

On our iMac G5 iSight model the hard drive is constantly audibly accessing, if while idle (not sleeping)
Will dragging the hard drive image in system preferences/spotlight/privacy correct this?
Thanks in advance
