Not even an excerpt? What's so good about it?

Sure. ;-)

Good overview of the issue of how and when to run regular maintenance on OS X. A run-down of the 3rd party apps that do it, as well as ways to di it directly from the OS X terminal.

"I've always heard about these "background maintenance tasks" that OS X performs in its omniscient glory, but I never knew much about what they actually were or when they were performed. This weekend I finally did some digging and thought I'd post a few thoughts that might help give some Mac users insight into maintaining OS X beyond simple permissions repairs and emptying the trash."

My understanding is that Tiger is smart enough to do missed tasks (i.e. because the computer was off or asleep) when it has the next chance. AFAIK, the author didn't do all his homework.

Yep.

That article is a complete waste of time and effort.

Although the comment section at the bottom had me smiling:

OS X didn't used to be smart enough to do missed tasks. Is this new to Tiger?

Yep, it's mentioned in the man page for launchd.plist:

the computer is asleep, launchd will start the job the next time the com-

woken, those events will be coalesced into one event upon wake from
sleep.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!
