how do i set the view preference for certain folders in the finder?
for example i want my documents folder to be viewed using the column view, and photos as list view.
strangely theyre currently doing the opposite and i can't figure out how to switch them.

You set the folder to the view you want and then close the window before navigating to somewhere else.

This is tricky. Make sure when you open your root folder (the folder you want set to column view). DO NOT click on any other folders until you've changed it to column view and close. Once you start clicking on other folders (while in column view) it's actually going to change the settings to that folder that is clicked instead of the original folder you wanted. It's confusing because it looks like you're still in the same window, but you're actually inside a different folder.

Also, I forgot to mention. If you're using Single Window browsing in the Finder and your window is set to column view, it will remain in column view for as long as that window is open or if you set it to a different view. You cannot be in column view and click on a folder and have it automatically set to list view. Here are 3 very handy key commands which will make your life a whole lot easier, I don't go a day without them:
cmd-1 (icon view)
cmd-2 (list view)
cmd-3 (column view)
cmd-n (new Finder window)
cmd-shift-a (applications folder)
cmd-shift-h (home folder)
cmd-shift-u (utilities folder)
I hope this helps you out.
