I opened a WMV file and somehow set VLCplayer for the defualt viewer. how do I rest it back to WMV?

Get Info on that file (command+i) or via the Finder 'File' menu, inside the Info window look for 'Open with:' and choose the app you want from the pop-up menu. You could clic 'Change all…' so every file in that format would be opened by the app of your choice.
