dumb memory question

I have a system status widget that breaks memory down into four categories, and I can only think of two categories. memory being used and memory not being used. what is the difference between Wired, Inactive, Active, and Free memory. My main question is what is Inactive memory, but i really don't know what any of them are specifically.
