Just bought a $16.99 copy of the Biggie Duets, when I put it in my drive on my powerbook it just spits it back out at me and won't come up in ITunes or anything.
I just want to listen to my CD.
I'm thinking it has the new anti-piracy software on it, since it's a new release, and this is doing something? I'm not on Tiger, still running Panther w/ all current software updates.
Help?

signatures are a waste of bandwidth
especially ones with political tripe in them.

Return the CD to the store you bought it at and demand a full refund.

What label is the CD? If it's Sony (or a Sony brand) then it probably is "copy protected" through use of a software hidden on the disc. It installs a hackable backdoor on Windows machines, and often doesn't work at all on Macs. Sony is coughing up non-protected discs, MP3s (not copy protected either) of all the songs on the disc, and a few other nice things because of their lack of thought in this debacle. If it's a Sony disc, you should be able to get Sony to replace it for you free. Check 'em out.

bring it back to the store, say you want a full refund because it isn't a CD (as in, doesn't comply with the published CD standard)
then pirate it

Have you guys actually gotten refunds by doing this or did the store clerks look at you as if you were acting like a bunch of asses?

They're not mutually exclusive options.

I confirm that Sony now agrees to exchange the protected CDs which led to the media uproar.

If is't from EMI, read their "problem solving" page... Click.
CD's carrying the Copy Control Logo apply to these restrictions...
And from EMI:
Question:
Why does iTunes® not play the disc correctly ?
Answer:
iTunes® is reacting to the copy control technology, which is why the copy control system carries a Mac® player.
And that's why I'm returning my Depeche Mode CD today - I wan't it to play in iTunes and on my iPod, not using som strange mediaplayer...

while I don't advocate theft--usually--I agree with nuggetman.
You made a good faith effort to purchase a CD, and they ripped you off.
Return the gesture.

That is weird. I bought the new Depeche Mode CD off Amazon and it imported fine in my iTunes. This is on Tiger with all the updates and latest version of iTunes.

Could just be a slightly defective disc. My copy of the New Pornographers' "Mass Romantic" doesn't work at all in my Powerbook (spits it back out just like you describe) but works fine in my old Power Mac. Slot-loading drives seem to be just a little more particular about defects.

Does your CD have the Copy Control Logo ?
I didn't try, because then I would not be able to return the CD, so I followed the gudelines from EMI.

Remember kids: every time you listen to DRM-infected music, Celine Dion kills an iMac.
Please, think of the iMacs.

Remember, every time you kill Celine Dion, someone who listens to music does not suffer.

Just a heads up, any music disc with some sort of doomed DRM on it is NOT a CD, as in Compact Disc, and you will be unable to find the Compact Disc logo on it. Personally I just don't buy any single physical disc that doesn't have a visible CD logo.
I would try to return it, explain that the thing is "Copy Protected" and you couldn't play it on your computer. Why not accept refunds if they "Copy Protect" their CDs? Kind of paradox here, they should have no problems if the thing is properly protected, right?
If you can not make them to refund you, just pirate the disc off the Internet. In this particular case you are not doing anything wrong at all, since you own the original media and you want a copy for your personal use. Talk of another paradox here ...
In the end I'm just mroe and more buying music at the iTMS when available, since its DRM is quite friendly, as I can just burn the music to a compliant CD and play it anywhere (although the music goes straight to the iPod 99% of the time )

Utilities like Wiretap Pro will output a music file in the format you select (AIFF, MP3 etc. on your hard disk) that has whatever music you have played through your Mac's sound system. Assuming one can get the DRM music "CD" to actually play through one's computer, couldn't one make an unprotected or unrestricted file of the music? In fact, wouldn't this work for any of the proprietary or "protected" formats (including iTunes own version of DRM)? By the way, I don't personally believe in stealing music, what I am interested in doing here is get these DRM songs into my iPOD or other MP3 player for one person (i.e. me) to listen to.
Is there some degradation in using Wiretap Pro?
