I was running 10.4.3 just fine until yesterday morning. When I got up and tried to bring the system out of sleep mode it was froze solid. I could move the mouse around buit unable to do anything else. At this point I shut the system down using the power button on back. When I tried to start it back up it took a long time and it only got to the login screen were I was unable to get past. I entered my username and password many times and it wouldnt except anything. I had not applied any updates recently or done anything out of the ordenary.
At this point I have added a firewire hard drive and put a new install of 10.4 on it. I can see the old hard drive and all its files. I would like to fix the old install rather than start copying everything over and starting over.
Thanks for any help

i've been working with zephyr on his problem.

He has a Rev B iMac w/ 1GB RAM. 10.4.3 with latest updates. He runs Onyx before and after each update.

I searched the OS X forum and gave him these tips to try but nothing worked:

http://forums.macnn.com/90/mac-os-x/263408/i-cant-get-desktop-my-primary/

It would seem all he needs to do is reset his keychain? Or find a way to override the login or add a new Admin? I've searched for two days and nothing I've found seems to help.

Any help would be appreciated as I'm not local to him and can't help as much as I'd like to.

TIA

Try booting from the 10.4 install disk. There's a password reset utility that you can use while booted from the installer disk. See if it's just a password problem before trying anything else. I believe you can also set the root password from here, which could be an alternative method of logging in if nothing else works.

Thanks for the info Detrius. It turns out that it was my usename that somehow went away.
I did these steps

fsck
mount -uw /
cd /var/db
mv netinfo netinfo.bak
rm .AppleSetupDone
reboot

then started up the imac re-entered new username and password. Then copied all my old info into my new user and away I went.
