Hello all,

Should this be in the Apps forum? I thought it might go in here as Dicitonary.app is part of OS X. Anyways..
I've just noticed something strange with dictionary.app . When I open up the program itself, it looks like this:

However, when I use the Dictionary widget, it works fine.

Does anyone know what that little exclamation mark icon means?

Also, I also just accidentally turned off one of the two default dictionaries. I forget what it's called (Oxford American Writers Thesaurus.dict, perhaps??) - does anyone know how I restore this? I've tried dragging the file into the Preferences pane in Dictionary.app, but to no effect.

Alternatively, is there any way in which I can just reset the Dictionary.app ?

Thanks.

Is the file still in /Library/Dictionaries?

If not, maybe you can find it with spotlight (it is indeed called Oxford American Writers Thesaurus.dict, though the .dict may be absent on your Mac depending on your Finder prefs), move it back into that folder, and relaunch the Dictionary app. If that doesn't do it, perhaps try logging out and back in as well.

As for why it can't find a word in the regular dictionary: that's pretty bizarre. It might not hurt to trash your preferences as well (drag com.apple.Dictionary.plist out of ~/Library/Preferences and relaunch the dictionary or log out and back in).

If this stuff is all obvious to you, I apologize. I don't recognize your username, so I'm not sure how Mac-savvy you are. Good luck.

Yay! I did what you suggeste, and Dictionary.app reset itself. Thanks for the help. And no, I've only had my mac for two months, so it wasn't that obvious to me. Thanks for your help slugslugslug!

You're quite welcome! Was it the first or second suggestion that worked? And did you have to log out + back in or just restart Dictionary.app?

What is the reason people have for moving around system installed apps and Libraries?
