I use Tiger 10.4.2 on a 14inch G4 IBook. Recently my HELP file refused to work but only with "Apple Help". It will display the help files of other programs (those that do not use their own, that is) without problems. I logged out as Administrator and WAS able to use apple help normally as another user, so the problem has to be in my personal directory.

I deleted the .plist for help and the help viewer application from the Library>Preferences folder (directory) in my home folder, and that didn't fix the problem.

Someone told me that it may be a font conflict, since I have Office 2004 and Word installs its own fonts that may conflict with mine. How do I determine if this is the problem, and then how do I fix it?

Any other ideas or suggestions from anyone?

Thank you all very much.

You could try removing the fonts stored in your personal Library.

Go to Yourusername/Library/Fonts and just grab the files inside and set them aside for a moment. A folder on the desktop, for example.

You might even want to log out, or even restart after this.

If things start working, return the fonts little by little until the evil one is found.

The first thing to try is clearing the cache files for Help in your ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.helpui folder. If that doesn't work, launch Font Book and resolve any duplicate fonts.

I did this and it fixed the problem. Thank you for your kind advice.

All best wishes,
