Some softwares put these up without you asking. Where do you go to pull them down? thanks.

Command-drag them off the menubar.

command-drag only works with apple apps.
in other cases...check the preferences of that app, there's usually an option to show (or not show) a menu item....

Oh, I found it. the app had it's own box in the system prefs. thanks.

There are many non-Apple menulets that can be removed with command-drag, but you're right, some cannot.
