It doesn't work, does it?

A friend got a new iMac G5 and it won't detect his G4 Quicksilver running OS9 to transfer anything.

Does that mean he has to do it all manually over FW?

Yep. The assistant can only migrate systems running Mac OS X 10.1 or later, as clearly shown at http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/setup/ .

I figured. I wish stupid Apple would at least give you a hint of this in the program. We had to transfer the old fashioned way: plain ol' copying.

Yup. I still think it's stupid that Mac OS X can't even import Mac OS 9 system preferences (e.g. network configuration, file sharing).

Yeah, Apple is doing it's best to forget OS9 ever existed. Oh well. Soon all the "What, no classic?" messages will start flying once the Intel machines are announced.
