For some reason, tonight I can't open my iTunes. I get a "not enough memory" error. So naturally I opened Activity Monitor and noticed that my Kernel Task is taking 48MB of Real Ram and almost a GIG of Virtual RAM. What's the deal? So far I uninstalled "Flip4Mac WMV Player" and "Little Snitch" and I've restarted 3 times and nothing has helped. Can anyone explain why I can't open iTunes? This is the first time I've had this problem since OS X, I should have plenty of RAM to run iTunes (768MB). Something's definitely wrong.

Did you maybe install a kernel extension with a memory leak?

This is why I never install third party stuff that requires a kernel extension.

How do I find out if I have Kernel Extensions installed?

You probably installed a theme recently that isn't iTunes compliant. I've seen that when I was trying to theme iTunes without using ShapeShifter. Try reinstalling iTunes fresh!

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

Well... the last thing I did to my computer was try Max's new Aqua Extreme theme with the Installer. Then I didn't like it, so I used the "Restore" feature. That may be the problem. Lemme try re-installing iTunes and see what happens.

I reinstalled iTunes and all is good now. But, what I still can't figure out is... why is my Kernel_Task taking up so much RAM? Is this normal?

48 MB is not a lot of RAM.

Little Snitch is one to watch. It's pretty low-level and can cause problems. I even got a kernel panic uninstalling one beta version.
