When I tried to watch Steve's Keynote today, I realized QT doesn't play audio anymore. System sounds work, iTunes works, other apps that make sound work, but for some reason QuickTime won't make a peep! This is on a first gen 1.67 GHz 17" PowerBook. I tried the following:

- Repairing permissions
- Rebooting
- Updated to 10.4.4 and new QuickTime 7.0.4
- Tried internal speakers and external (silly but what the heck I tried)
- Checked preferences in QT application
- Checked system prefs for QT
- Check Sound system prefs
- Tried opening the URL to the keynote in iTunes streaming, it played the video but still no audio - as I said above song audio is fine in iTunes

I'm really frustrated at this point. I tried searching Apple's KB, but didn't find anything relevant.

Any ideas ... any ideas at all would be appreciated.

Reinstall QuickTime 7.0.1? 7.0.4 was pulled. And is back again.

The audio was broken before I ran the update to 7.0.4, but who knows maybe running the installer again will replace/repair some damaged setting or file.

That was brilliant! How the hell did you figure that trick out? Any idea why that works?

I figured it out by reading it here. It resets something that is set wrong which you can also correct in Audio-MIDI-Setup, but you'd have to remember what is wrong and which is the correct setting (which I can't). Garageband does reset it automatically.
