I try to repair permissions and get following message.....
Disk utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool
and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility.
Same on numerous retries!

This topic has been extensively discussed in Macfixit and in Apple Discussion forums. It can be caused when one is running 10.3.9 and updates to iTunes 6.02 -- does that correspond to your configuration? If so, here is the suggested fix from Macfixit:
"Three workarounds have already been noted, and now MacFixIt reader Ian Waterson offers a less invasive procedure: deleting all .pkg files with iTunes in their name from /Library/Receipts except for for iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg."
Other fixes were discussed including moving iTunes out of the Applications folder to the desktop, running Disk Utility to repair permissions, then moving it back. I personally would prefer the one above that removes old iTunes files from the Recipts, but I would recommend moving them to a safe archive instead of deleting them just in case you wish to backtrack to your original configuration.
If you are not runing 10.3.9 and iTunes 6.02, then you may have a different problem involving some sort of corruption in the Receipts folder that may require a different solution.

Hi romeosc,
If you had followed steve626's advice - you would have had no need to reformat your hard drive nor would you have had to reinstall Tiger!
I had the same problem and I found that Ian Waterson's workaround of using 'a less invasive procedure' as described by steve626 in his post was the perfect 'fix' .....

I tried that too but I think I messed up something original when backing up partially some files from a cloned drive!
