Can I delete the whole system MacOS 10.3.9 simply by deleting the System and Library folders on the disk?

MacOS 10.3.9 on one G5 is totally messed up and after a day of trouble shooting I think I should just start all over from the distribution CD and then upgrade with the OS 10.9 Combo.

Is it enough just to delete the System and Library folders?

Will my home directory survive the new install?

Well, the system won't let you delete the System folder and the Library folder, from within the operating system. Simply deleting those folders won't do anything for the hidden folders, like bin, var, etc, private (and others).

What you want to do is an Archive and Install (which you can do from the installation CD or DVD), and that will keep your home directory and settings intact.

If you really want to zero your system, you can erase the disk before the installation (it's one of the options). Be sure to have a backup of your data then.

As Person Man pointed out, an Archive and Install is what you want to do. It will move all the folders that comprise your current system into a folder called "Previous Systems", which you can then just drag to the Trash and remove all traces of the old system in one swoop (while leaving your home folder and your applications intact).

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Many thanks for the fast and informative responses. I'll try the archive and install tomorrow. There is one more complication: The system disk is a two-disk raid system set up with the disk utility. Can I install directly or should I kill the raid first?
