I have XFree86 installed on several machines. On one machine I decided to get Gnome up and running as an experiment. I was somewhat successful. But I still don't get a gdm logon screen when I startup XDarwin. It just boots to the desktop.
How do I get it to request a logon at XDarwin startup?
How do I add already installed applications (x) to the menus?
Thanks,
--Chip

Fink is a pretty easy way to get gnome and/or KDE installed. But before you can get it running, you need to modify your .xinitrc script.
I've messed around with gdm, kdm, xdm, etc... on OS X before, and it isn't very pretty. I never got gdm working, though I did get the other two working. The problem with getting any of those working is that they get launched as root, and then they respawn the X server whenever you quit X11, which can be a REAL pain. So, you'd have to configure one of managers to run quietly in the background as an XDMCP server (or whatever the letters are) and then configure the X server to query for an XDMCP server whenever it is launched. That way, the server won't be respawned on you when you quit.
Here are a few other interesting ideas:

The hint at the bottom (the very first Xnest hint) is mine. I cared enough to figure that out, but I haven't cared enough to dig through the xdm man pages to figure out what you need. I've started and gotten bored several times. Sorry.
