I just installed Tiger last night on my 12" G3 iBook and my Pismo and it runs great on both of them! I am addicted to these awesome Dashboard widgets already . I had been wanting to upgrade for so long and I'm definitely glad that I did. Everything seems to run much faster now. Anyways, that's the end of my gloating, just wanted to share!

Hi There ..
I'm so jealous .. I would love to upgrade to Tiger from Panther but i don't have a dvd drive. I couldn't believe it when Apple said there would be no installer on cd.
I guess I'll wait for Leopard and then buy a new machine with a dvd drive ....
I know there was a plan where you bought the dvds ... and exchanged them for cds through apple .. but i didn't feel like going through all that rigamorole .. plus it was an extra 15 bucks or so ... and you couldn't keep the dvd's.

Now here's a legitmate reason to get onto BitTorrent. Remember, you purchase the license, not the media. I'd just download the CD version of Tiger. I'm sure there're images somewhere.
Or see if there's someone else on here who has it and wouldn't mind burning a copy. I'm fairly certain the $15 is for parts, labor, and shipping.

Excellent! I've been reluctant to upgrade my G4 iMac because it only has 512 MB and it's already "paging in" like crazy, and I though the upgrade would slow things down. I wanted to upgrade the RAM first, but it costs about 170$ CDN for a 1 gig SO-DIMM stick, and it's only a ValueRAM from Kingston. Add that to the cost of Tiger itself and it's tempting to wait and buy a new computer, like a mini for a few hundreds bucks more... Now with Intel Macs coming, it's even harder to decide

A G4 iMac is still a fine Mac, although you do need the extra RAM. And bergy, there is a CD distribution of Tiger - Tiger Media Exchange. You have to buy the DVD version first and then send the DVD to Apple with a form and an additional $9.95. Interestingly, that form appears to endorse backing up the DVD before sending it to Apple.

So what functionality/feature pushed you over the edge? I'm still waiting to upgrade our iBook (I won't have access to the student-priced version of Tiger until Summer), and I haven't yet seen a trully compelling reason to make the change. Lots of cool stuff, of course, but not anything that says "you MUST change!"

If you're happy with Panther, I don't think there's a super compelling reason to jump on Tiger right now. I use both Panther and Tiger most every day, on my iBook and G5 respectively, and sometimes I forget I'm not on Tiger on my iBook because it's essentially the same thing. I think the feature I miss the most when I'm not on Tiger is the built-in dictionary, followed by dashboard. Now, as time goes on, those who have stayed with Panther will have more limited choices - lack of access to Safari upgrades and other Tiger-only applications - but at this point I'm not desperate for Panther on my iBook.

Well, one thing that requires Tiger that I would really like to use at home is Google Earth. Other than that I can't think of anything essential Tiger has that Panther doesn't.

Big Mac and hotani, thanks for the info. That's kind of what I thought-so far there's no 'killer app' that compells one to move to Tiger. And I'm running Google Earth on the PC that plays server, etc. on my home network, so I'm still not feeling a rush. Thanks again.
