I just turned on my iMac G4 running OS 10.4x panther and I noticed that all my desktop setting reverted to default. Some of the icon were even missing and shows "?" on the dock. I tried to restart, but the thing just sits there on the blue screen with the round countdown clicker spinning. I powered it down with the on/off button (didn't like doing that) but had no choice. When the OS came up, same situation again. When I try and run a App, it just hangs up and can not even force quit. Luckly, several weeks ago I purchased a external HD and backed up all my library files and docs. I proceeded to reload Panther and I click the icon and it asked me to reboot and there I get stuck. It will not reboot to initiate the reloading of the OSX. WHAT CAN I DO!!!!!

No description in the title and a link to another forum. That is a great way to get help. Here is a link for you to read:

http://forums.macnn.com/mac-os-x/announcement/a/

Steps 3 and 4 should help.

Next time you'll get quicker more directed help if you use a more descriptive title.

Anyways have you repaired permissions and run fsck on startup?

Sounds like you may have hard drive issues, what does the smart status say on the disk utilitiy.

Is external Firewire drive a clone or have a valid system on it?

If so boot holding down Option key and select thta drive as startup and then run disk Utility, Disk Warrior etc...

If not boot off OS install CD and run disk utility!

What they said about your title. I'll change it for you this time. Think like the people you want help from: use titles that get attention, not titles that wimper and plead, and you'll get much better responses.
