I've always wanted to work with Apple's but have'nt had the resources to buy a preloaded 'ready to use' Mac. Through our business I aquired a XServe G4 (dual 1Ghz, 2gb ram) but has no OS. I dont really need it for server use but was thinking if it is possible to buy and install Tiger onto it? I know its possible to install Tiger Server onto any G4 Mac, but is it possible to do it the other way around?

That will work, and your XServe actually makes a really nice Mac. However, I would buy a better graphics card, especially if your XServe currently has a PCI graphics card, otherwise, the bad graphics card will slow down the OS.

In addition, you should buy an external firewire DVD burner (I believe your XServe only has a CD-ROM drive). You will then be able to install Tiger from the external DVD drive. Update it to 10.4.4, then install the following patch to make the DVD player work with the external drive.

Now you'll have a really great Mac.
