I recently got my first Mac (mini). I'm loving it so far. I was looking at the system properties and found that I'm at 10.4.2. Would it be beneficial for me to go ahead with the Software Update utility? There are 11 updates available:
Pages Update 1.0.2
Apple Intermediate Codec 1.0.1
Keynote Update 2.0.2
GarageBand Update 2.0.2
iPhoto Update 5.0.4
Java 1.3.1 and 1.4.2 Release 2
iTunes Phone Driver
QuickTime 7.0.4
iTunes 6.0.2
iPod Updater 2006-01-10
Mac OS X Update Combined 10.4.4
If I should go ahead with the update, does it matter in what order they are installed or should I just select all 11 and update?
In addition, I also got a iLife '06 on CD. Should I install it first then do the update or uninstall '05, then install '06?
I'm just unsure of how I should proceed.

Just install everything that is on that list. Software Update will automatically install everything in the right order etc.
Just skip the updates for the iLife 05 apps since you are going to install a newer version after the system update anyway.

Thanks a bunch! I'm gonna get started on this right away before I get a lot of stuff transferred over from the PC.

So the ones that don't need to be checked are the Keynote, GarageBand, iPhoto?
Also, the Apple Intermediate Codec entry references "iLife '05 users". I think I should still install the codec though.

Keynote is part of iWork (as is Pages). You got that as demo with your Mac. If you want to save time and you're not playing with the iWork demo you can uncheck it. Or simply update it as well, it doesn't matter that much.
iPhoto and Garageband are part of iLife. Since you're going to install iLife 06 you can safe some time by skipping the updates for the old version. I think I would install Apple Intermediate Codec since it's probably small and if iLife 06 comes with a newer version it will update that (and if not it will continue to appear in Software Update).
You can not make much wrong here actually. If you want to save download time and disk space you may uncheck stuff that you feel you don't need – like let's say an iPod update if you don't own an iPod. The only thing you should always install are security updates and system updates (since the latter contain security fixes as well).
