Argh! Yet AGAIN I've run Software Update and it just sits there, and when I open Disk Utility it never finds any disks, it also just sits there searching. If I run an installer it will get to the box where you choose a disk to install on, and yes you've guessed it, no disk will appear.

Only solution I've found is to restart. This has happened often with Tiger of all versions on this dual 2ghz G5 with 1gb RAM.

Any clues anyone? Is there something I can force quit each time to save a restart? What could be causing this? Disk Utility worked fine this morning, yet this afternoon it's borked.

I have a LaCie external drive connected via FW800, not sure if that's relevant.

Update: as soon as I turn on the LaCie drive it mounts, then everything else starts working fine again. I checked the firmware and it's fine, is this just a firewire weirdness perhaps?

Further update: If I unmount the LaCie and turn it off but leave it plugged in, it borks everything. If I turn it back on, or unplug the FW cable normality returns. Grrrr, this is stupid!
